Hotel Dunn Inn

San José is the most populated province in the country. It is also the cultural center. The town centers around Plaza de la Cultura, meeting place for many Costa Ricans.

National Theater

It was built at the end of the XIX century. It is the most cherished piece of architecture in the country. Inside you can enjoy a guided tour and learn about its history. You can also find information about the cultural presentations that take place here. Photos with flash are not allowed inside. There is also a very nice cafeteria that offers a good variety of dishes and also serves as art gallery.

Schedule: From Monday to Saturday, from 9 am to 4 pm.

Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo

It has six showrooms. It shows innovative art and it sometimes has special exhibitions. It is located on 3rd Avenue, 15th and 17th Streets.

Schedule: Monday to Saturday, 10:30 am to 5:30 pm. Monday free entrance.

Admission: $2.

Museo Nacional

It was built in 1917 as a military headquarters. In 1948, when the army was abolished, it was turned into a museum. It is a great place to learn about Costa Rican history. There is a Pre Columbian history room and it shows the development of the country up to the arrival of Spanish conquerors. Then there is a room devoted to Indigenous gold creations. The third room shows the history of the country up to 194o. The Colonial room recreates a Colonial house.

Schedule: Tuesday to Sunday, from 8 am to 4:30 pm. It is located in Cuesta de Moras, next to to Plaza de la Democracia.

 

Teatro Popular Melico Salazar

It was built in 1928 by an Spanish architect. It has a baroque style. Here you could watch dance, music or theater presentation throughout the year.

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8: 00 am to 4:00 pm. It is located on Second Avenue, Main and Second Streets. Guided visits if requested beforehand. See billboard for upcoming events.

Museo de los Niños

This is a fun activity for the family. Since 1909, and for 90 years, this building housed a penitentiary. Children (and adults) can learn about history, science, art in an entertaining way. It also houses the National Auditorium, where there are art shows frequently.

Schedule: everyday from 9:30 to 5:00 pm.

Shopping

In San José, there are several places to buy souvenirs:

Plaza de la Democracia: there are nice souvenir stands where you can find many beautiful objects, including paintings, clothing, jewelry and purses.

La Casona: a famous two-store old house where you can buy souvenirs indoors in downtown San José. There is a big variety to choose from.

Calle de los Souvenirs, in Moravia (20 minutes from downtown): Several stores where you can get all you need to bring back home.
