Tortuguero is an area full of wildlife. Here, 11 habitats have been identified. The park covers 18.974 ha. of land and 52.265 ha of sea. There are some 2000 species of plants and 400 of trees. In the park, there is a system of natural canals, great for an adventurous trip to admire nature at its best.

Tortuguero is considered to be one of the most important nesting sites in the Caribbean for the green turtle, which can be seen from July to October. Other species of sea turtles also nest along the long beach every year: the leatherback and the hawksbill turtles. Observing turtles nest is an amazing experience that should be enjoyed respectfully.

Since there are no roads to Tortuguero, most tourist take organized tours that arrange everything from travel to lodging. Tours around Tortuguero involve sailing through canals of different sizes through a very humid tropical rainforest.

Local airlines also provide daily flights to tortuguero. Travelling by bus involves a boat transfer. From San José you will have to take the 6:30 a.m. bus to Limon. Once you arrive in Limon, take a taxi to the boat docks in Moin that go to the Tortuguero Canals. Once in Moin, you will have to hire a boat taxi to Tortuguero.

The park is opened everyday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
